Dubai Gold Rate in Indian Rupees Today – Compare with Kerala, Chennai and Mumbai

Every Indian family in the UAE does the same sum before a trip home: what is today's Dubai gold rate in Indian rupees, and how does it compare with the gold rate in Kerala, Chennai or Mumbai? The converter above answers the first half instantly, taking the live dirham rate per gram and multiplying by the current AED to INR exchange rate for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K. This page answers the second half: why the Dubai price in rupees is usually below the Indian shop price, how much of that gap survives customs, what 916 hallmarking means on both sides, and how to time the purchase against your remittances.

How to convert the Dubai gold rate into rupees

The calculation is three multiplications. Take the weight in grams, multiply by the Dubai rate per gram in dirhams for your karat, then multiply by the dirham-to-rupee exchange rate. For a 10 g 22K bangle, that is 10 × the 22K dirham rate × the AED/INR rate. The converter does this with live figures:

Dubai gold rate in INR

…

KaratINR / 1 gINR / 10 gINR / Tola
24K (999)………
22K (916)………
21K (875)………
18K (750)………

1 USD = … INR. Converted with today's exchange rate. Local prices in that country include import duty and local taxes, so they are usually higher.

Two details trip people up. First, India quotes gold per 10 grams while Dubai quotes per gram, so multiply the Dubai gram figure by ten before comparing with a Kerala or Chennai newspaper table. Second, the exchange rate you actually get matters: the interbank AED/INR rate shown online is better than the rate at an exchange house or on a card, so a Dubai price looks slightly cheaper on a converter than it will feel on your statement.

Because the dirham is pegged to the dollar at 3.6725, the Dubai rate in rupees moves for two reasons: the world gold price and the rupee's own level against the dollar. When the rupee weakens, gold in India becomes more expensive even on a day when the dollar price has not changed, which is why the Indian rate has drifted higher over the years than the dirham rate alone would explain.

Why the Dubai gold rate is lower than the gold rate in Kerala, Chennai or Mumbai

The metal is the same price everywhere; the difference is what sits on top. In the UAE there is no import duty on gold, VAT is 5% on jewellery and refundable to tourists, and investment bars are zero-rated. In India, gold crosses the border with a basic customs duty (cut to 6% in the July 2024 Union Budget, with cess on top, so check the current CBIC notification), then attracts 3% GST on the sale, and making charges in the big South Indian chains tend to be higher than the souk's. Add the rupee's weakness and the Indian shop rate per gram sits visibly above the Dubai rate converted at the same moment.

Our is gold cheaper in Dubai guide walks through a worked example with the live rate. The headline: for a resident who stays within the duty-free allowance, Dubai is cheaper; for a tourist who reclaims VAT and declares correctly, it is usually still cheaper but by less; for anyone who exceeds the allowance, Indian duty can erase most of the gap.

Gold rate in Kerala: why Malayalis watch Dubai so closely

Kerala has the strongest gold culture in India, and the largest share of the UAE's Indian community. Gold is bought for every wedding, for a baby's first birthday, for Onam and Vishu, and families track the "gold rate Kerala today" the way others track the weather. The chains that dominate Kerala, including Malabar, Joyalukkas, Kalyan and Bhima, all have showrooms in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, so a Malayali buyer can compare the same brand's price on both sides.

That comparison is where the Dubai advantage shows most clearly. Kerala jewellers quote 22K per gram or per pavan (8 grams), and their making charges on bridal sets are among the highest in the country. A UAE resident buying the same 22K set in Deira during the Dubai Shopping Festival, when making charges are discounted, can save a meaningful percentage even before the customs allowance is considered. The guide to the big jewellers explains how the chains price on the UAE side.

Kerala buyers think in pavans. One pavan is 8 grams, so multiply the Dubai 22K gram rate by 8, then by the AED/INR rate, to get the Dubai pavan price in rupees for a direct comparison with the Thrissur or Kozhikode rate.

Chennai, Mumbai and the rest of India: regional rate differences

Searches for "gold rate in Chennai" or "gold rate today in Mumbai" return numbers that differ by a few rupees per gram from Kerala's, and from each other. The reason is local: state-level variations in the cost of transporting and insuring gold, local association rates set each morning by city jewellers' bodies, and different demand rhythms. Mumbai, as the import hub, is traditionally slightly cheaper than inland cities, while Chennai and Kerala rates are set by their own associations. None of these differences is as large as the gap with Dubai.

For an expat, the practical approach is to compare the Dubai rupee rate with the rate in your own home city, because that is where the gift will be valued or where you would otherwise buy. Use the 22K rate page for the Dubai figure most Indian buyers need, and remember that Indian newspaper tables are usually published once in the morning while the Dubai rate updates through the day.

916 hallmark: the same purity on both sides

Indian buyers look for the 916 mark, which means 91.6% gold, the definition of 22K. In India the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmark with a six-digit HUID code has been mandatory on most gold jewellery sold since 2021, and buyers expect to see it. Dubai jewellery is stamped with the same purity numbers, 916 for 22K, 875 for 21K and 750 for 18K, and the emirate operates its own assay and hallmarking system; the large chains also provide a purity certificate.

What this means in practice: a 916-stamped bangle from Dubai is the same purity as a BIS 916 bangle from Kochi, and an Indian jeweller will accept it for exchange on the basis of weight and testing. It will not carry the BIS HUID mark unless it was hallmarked in India, which does not affect its gold content but may matter if you want to resell it as new. Our hallmark and purity guide covers how to read the stamps and how shops test gold.

Carrying gold from Dubai to India: the limits that decide the saving

The saving only holds if you stay within the rules. Indian residents returning after more than a year abroad have a duty-free allowance for gold jewellery of 20 grams up to a value of ₹50,000 for men and 40 grams up to ₹100,000 for women; anything above is dutiable at the current rate, and bars and coins are not covered by the jewellery allowance at all. Declare at the red channel if you exceed the limit, keep every Dubai invoice, and expect customs to value the gold at the notified Indian rate rather than what you paid.

With gold prices well above where those rupee caps were set, the value cap now bites long before the gram cap, so check the latest figures before you fly. The full rules, worked examples and what happens at the airport are on our carrying gold from Dubai to India page. Tourists leaving the UAE can also reclaim the 5% VAT on jewellery through the Planet counters at departure, which widens the gap further if the paperwork is done at the time of purchase.

Timing your purchase against remittances

Most Indian families in the UAE are paid in dirhams and send rupees home every month, so the gold question is really a currency question. When the rupee weakens against the dollar, the same dirham salary buys more rupees but gold in India costs more rupees too; buying gold in Dubai in dirhams before travelling locks in the dollar-pegged price and sidesteps the Indian premium. When the rupee strengthens, the Indian price falls in rupee terms and the Dubai advantage narrows a little.

Seasonality matters as well. Indian demand peaks around Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali and the winter wedding months, and Dubai's chains respond with promotions aimed at that calendar. The price history page helps you see where today's rate sits against recent months, and the Gold Souk page explains where to compare quotes. None of this is advice: gold in both currencies can fall as well as rise, and the right time to buy wedding gold is when the wedding is.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Dubai gold rate in Indian rupees today?

The converter at the top of this page multiplies the live Dubai rate per gram for each karat by the current AED to INR exchange rate. Switch to 22K and multiply by ten to compare with Indian newspaper tables, which quote per 10 grams. Figures are indicative and update through the day.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?

Usually, yes, because the UAE charges no import duty, only 5% VAT that tourists can reclaim, and the souk's making charges are competitive. India adds customs duty, 3% GST and often higher labour. The saving is real within the duty-free allowance and shrinks once Indian customs duty applies to the excess.

How much gold can I take from Dubai to India without duty?

Residents returning after over a year abroad may bring 20 g of jewellery (up to ₹50,000) if male and 40 g (up to ₹100,000) if female duty-free. Above that, duty applies on the excess. Bars and coins are not covered. Keep invoices and declare if you exceed the limit; check the latest CBIC rules before travelling.

Why is the gold rate in Kerala higher than in Dubai?

Kerala's rate includes Indian import duty and 3% GST, and the local chains' making charges on 22K bridal gold are among India's highest. Dubai has no duty, lower VAT and competitive labour. The metal itself costs the same; everything on top is what makes the difference.

Will an Indian jeweller accept gold bought in Dubai?

Yes. Dubai jewellery stamped 916 is the same 22K purity as BIS 916 gold and is accepted for exchange on weight and testing. It will not carry the Indian HUID hallmark unless hallmarked in India, which does not change its value as metal but may matter for resale as a new piece.
