Gold Rate in Al Ain Today – Live Price per Gram and Where to Buy
The gold rate in Al Ain today is the national UAE rate: the same dirham price per gram that is displayed in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and every other emirate, updated through the day from the international market. The live table on this page gives it for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K, so you can check it before you drive to the old souk or one of the malls. Al Ain is a garden city, not a trading hub, which changes how and where people buy gold here, and this guide covers the souk area, the mall showrooms, the shoppers who cross from Buraimi, and what to expect on making charges, selling and VAT.

The same daily rate applies in all seven emirates. International spot price converted to dirhams at the official peg (1 USD = 3.6725 AED). Shops quote the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group rate plus making charges and 5% VAT on the labour.
Al Ain's jewellers write the same rate on their boards each morning and adjust it when the market moves. If a shop's figure is a dirham or two away from ours, that is the timing of the last update, not a local premium. The karat lines that matter most here are 21K, which the Emirati and wider Arab population of the city buys for sets and bangles, and 22K, the choice of the South Asian families who work in the city's hospitals, university and farms. Both are quoted per gram, and the price of a finished piece is that rate times the weight, plus labour and VAT. Treat the figures as indicative; the receipt follows the shop's board at the moment of sale.
Why Al Ain does not have its own gold rate
People sometimes assume a city 160 kilometres from the coast must pay a transport premium on gold. It does not. The metal price comes from the world market in US dollars per ounce, the dirham is pegged to the dollar, and the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group's retail rate is adopted nationwide because every wholesaler in the country buys and sells on it. A gram of 22K in the Al Ain souk is worth exactly what a gram of 22K is worth in Deira at the same minute.
What an inland city does change is the economics of the shop. Al Ain has fewer jewellers, less footfall from tourists and no walk-in trade from the airport, so each shop relies on repeat customers rather than volume. In practice that means two things for you. First, making charges can be a little firmer than in Dubai because there is less competition on a single street. Second, service is personal: the owner is usually behind the counter, remembers what your family bought last Eid, and will quote honestly if you show that you have checked today's rate. Al Ain gold souk: the old souk area
Al Ain's gold trade grew up around the central souk area near the old market, close to the oasis and the city's original commercial streets. The gold shops here are small, long-established and clustered within a few minutes' walk, which makes them the best place in the city to compare labour charges on similar pieces. Expect a strong emphasis on 21K Arabic and Gulf designs, heavy bangles, coin-style necklaces and sets for weddings, with a smaller selection of 22K South Asian styles than you would find in a Dubai lane.
Visiting tips:
- The souk is busiest on Friday evenings and Saturdays, when families from the city and from across the Oman border shop together. Weekday mornings are quiet enough to negotiate at length.
- Parking is on the street and in nearby public lots; it fills up on weekends, so arrive early or share a car.
- Ask whether a displayed piece is hallmarked and request the weight on the scale in front of you. Reputable shops do this without being asked.
- Carry cash or a card; most shops take both, but a cash buyer sometimes gets a slightly better labour figure.
If you are used to the scale of Deira, the Dubai Gold Souk page gives a sense of the difference. Al Ain's souk is calmer and less flashy, and many residents prefer it for exactly that reason.
Gold shops in Al Ain malls: Al Ain Mall, Bawadi Mall and Al Jimi
For air conditioning, parking and the big chain brands, Al Ain's malls are the alternative to the souk. Al Ain Mall, in the centre near the main roundabouts, has showrooms of the national jewellery chains that South Asian residents know from Dubai, with published rate cards, card payment and seasonal making-charge offers. Bawadi Mall, on the southern edge of the city, is the largest shopping centre in Al Ain and draws families from the outer districts and from Buraimi; its jewellery stores lean towards 22K bridal collections and diamond-set 18K pieces. Al Jimi Mall, closer to the northern neighbourhoods, has a smaller selection but is convenient for those living around Al Jimi and Hili.
Chain showrooms rarely negotiate on the rate or the published labour, but they do run promotions, sometimes waiving or discounting making charges on selected collections around Diwali, Eid and the UAE's shopping festivals. They are also the easiest place to buy a small 24K bar or a coin for savings, which is zero-rated for VAT. Our guide to the UAE's main jewellers compares the chains, and the gold shop near me page lists areas by emirate, including Al Ain.
Shoppers from Buraimi and Oman
Al Ain sits directly against Al Buraimi in Oman, and the two towns share a shopping economy. Omani families cross for the UAE's wider selection and for its tax treatment: there is no import duty on gold in the UAE and VAT is 5%, so the final price in Al Ain is often competitive with what is available across the border, particularly on 21K sets, which both sides buy. On weekends the souk and Bawadi Mall are noticeably fuller with Omani-plated cars.
If you are shopping from Oman, keep these points in mind. The rate you pay is in dirhams; Omani rials are widely accepted at a shop's own exchange rate, but paying in AED by card or cash avoids a poor conversion. Keep the invoice with the weight and karat clearly stated, as you may need it when you return home. Customs rules on carrying jewellery between the two countries change and are applied at the border post, so check the current Omani guidance before buying a large quantity; this page cannot give you a figure. Finally, note that the 5% UAE VAT is refundable only to tourists who leave by air, sea or land through a departure point with Planet refund facilities, so ask the shop to register the sale at the till if you intend to claim.
Making charges and bargaining in a smaller city
Every price in Al Ain is built the same way: weight × today's karat rate, plus the making charge, plus 5% VAT on the total. The making charge is the only part you can influence, and in a city with fewer shops the way you ask matters. Open with the weight and the day's rate so the conversation is about labour alone; ask for the charge per gram rather than as a lump sum, because per-gram figures are easier to compare between two shops; and ask whether the quoted labour includes any stones or just the gold work.
Plain chains, bangles and rings carry the lowest labour. Intricate Gulf filigree, enamel and coin-set pieces carry the highest, and that is fair, since a craftsman spent days on them. A reasonable approach is to compare one souk quote with one mall quote for the same weight and style, then decide. Before you go, use the gold calculator to work out the metal value of the weight you have in mind, and read the making charges guide for typical ranges. The how to buy gold checklist, written for Dubai, applies without change in Al Ain.
Selling gold in Al Ain and the VAT rules
Selling in Al Ain works like anywhere in the UAE: the buyer weighs, tests and pays the day's rate for the karat minus a margin. Because there are fewer buyers than in Dubai, the margin can be wider, so it pays to get a quote from a souk shop and from a chain showroom, and to bring the original bill and your Emirates ID. If a buyer offers far below the live rate on this page for hallmarked 21K or 22K, walk away; for heavy items, some residents find it worth taking the drive to Abu Dhabi or Dubai for a second opinion. The steps, from testing to payment, are in how to sell gold in Dubai.
VAT at a glance: 5% on jewellery, including labour; zero-rated on investment gold of 99% purity or more such as bars and bullion coins; refundable to tourists through the Planet scheme on invoices of at least AED 250 when the goods leave the UAE within 90 days. Residents cannot claim the refund.
Families thinking of gold as savings rather than adornment can compare the price of gold bars and the UAE gold price history before deciding; nothing on this page is investment advice, and gold can fall as well as rise.
Frequently asked questions
What is the gold rate in Al Ain today?
The live table at the top of this page shows today's rate per gram in Al Ain for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K, in dirhams and dollars. It is the national UAE rate, so it is identical to the rate in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Shops add a making charge and 5% VAT to reach the final price.
Where is the Al Ain gold souk?
The gold shops are clustered in the central old souk area of Al Ain, near the city's traditional market streets and the oasis. They are small, family-run and within walking distance of each other. For chain showrooms, head to Al Ain Mall, Bawadi Mall or Al Jimi Mall.
Is gold cheaper in Al Ain than in Dubai?
The gram rate is the same. Dubai's souk has far more shops competing, so making charges on common designs can be slightly lower there and bargaining goes further. For a single ring or chain, the saving rarely covers the drive; for a large wedding order, comparing a Dubai quote can be worthwhile.
Can visitors from Buraimi reclaim UAE VAT on gold?
Tourists who are not UAE residents can reclaim the 5% VAT on jewellery under the Planet scheme if the shop registers the purchase at the point of sale, the invoice is at least AED 250, and they leave through a departure point with refund facilities within 90 days. Check the current list of eligible land borders before relying on it.
Which karat do Al Ain shops mainly sell?
21K dominates the souk, reflecting Emirati and Arab tastes for deeper-yellow sets and bangles. The malls carry more 22K for South Asian customers and 18K for diamond and designer pieces. Bars and coins are 24K. The stamp on the piece, 875, 916, 750 or 999, tells you which you are looking at.
